Summer Is a Great Time to Build Relationships with Your Legislators

Danielle Tolzmann,

Executive Director

During the summer, many state legislators and candidates for office spend more time in their home communities. This makes it a great time to get to know them.

You don’t need to ask for anything specific—simply introduce yourself, share your family’s story, and help them understand your experiences.

Why does this matter? In the months ahead, lawmakers may face difficult budget decisions. Some of those decisions could affect programs and services that support our children and families. When legislators know the people behind the programs, they are more likely to be thoughtful about how their decisions impact families.

Building relationships before a problem arises helps create understanding and trust. A simple conversation today can help ensure that family voices are heard when important decisions are made tomorrow.

Consider attending a local event, scheduling a visit, or sending an email to introduce yourself. Your story matters, and your voice can help shape better decisions for families across Wisconsin.
